Let’s plan the start of THE YEAR WITH INTENTION and self compassion.

HOW?

A lot of my clients say that they want to live and work a lot more seasonally. They want to find a rhythm through the year that helps them to adjust to the different energy levels they have over the year, and how they feel in different seasons. The good news is that I’ve found a planning method that does just that, and I’d love to share it with you.

Method: We’ll use Mia Moran’s ‘Create Your 90 Day Plan’ approach, with Quarterly and Seasonal Goals, to plan out the first 90 days of 2025. You’ll get clear on how you usually feel at this time of year, how you want to feel, and use that to guide exactly what you’ll focus on over the next 90 days.

Read on to find out more details about the approach, and for more information about how to attend (through Flown membership).

let’s map out the first 90 days of 2025 WITH SELF-COMPASSION.

Together we’ll separate you from your business or your work, to give you stronger boundaries and greater clarity.

We’ll define exactly how long your 90 days will be – because, spoiler alert, it doesn’t have to be 90 days! (Say what? 90 days doesn’t have to be 90 days? Yes! You got it!) You get to align with what you know of your own calendar and your own feelings at this specific time of year, and plan for that. I am planning for slightly longer than 90 days for the first part of 2025, so that my plan takes me right up to the school Easter holidays. You can find what works for you!

We’ll also connect to the big picture before you start planning. Why do we plan in the first place? Well, I learned that it’s so that we can do a bunch of decision making up front, and help reduce decision making fatigue. Planning separates deciding from doing, so that you are equipped to crack on and make good decisions as things change.

wHY ARE YOU DOING THIS, LOU?

In early Autumn 2024, I used this exact method to plan out the rest of this year.

I found the approach to be really respectful and caring of my own needs as a human, and at the same time it acknowledged that my business has needs too.

I’m really excited about using this approach again to plan early 2025 and I thought that other people might like to try it out, too.

I have been a Flown member for a while now and I get so much out of the co-working sessions. I’ve now been to so many sessions that I can host my own. This seemed to be a perfect opportunity to teach the approach, now that I’ve learned it and had a go myself. And Flown provides a fabulous platform to share on. The tech just works, and there’s some beautiful additions to the online interface. This includes a time bar showing you which part of the session you’re in and counting down to the next one.

wHY CREATE A 90 DAY PLAN?

Using 90 days matches the quarters that a lot of organisations use for financial planning. Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4. It’s a sensible way to divide up the year. They’re also a good amount of time to plan for – long enough to create a connection to your long term goals and make some solid progress; not so long that it gets tricky when things shift and the plan has to change. I’m having flashbacks to a Gantt chart I made at university, now…. but don’t worry, this is a Gantt chart free zone!

The approach is outlined across two episodes of the podcast Plan Simple. It’s the exact approach that Mia Moran uses with members of her Flow365 programme. These are the three key elements that I found most helpful when I used the approach in the Autumn. You:

  1. Separate out you from your business or your work.
  2. Define your own quarter – decide when it starts and ends, and how much working time you have within it.
  3. Connect to the big picture before you start planning.

There are links below to the exact episodes I listened to in order to understand and practice the approach.

KEY ELEMENTS

Let me tell you more about those three elements, and why there were so helpful.

  1. Separate out you from your work.

The Quarterly Goals vs Seasonal Goals episode introduces a key element: the difference between quarters and seasons.

Quarterly Goals relate to the financial year. Many organisations work to this system. In this method, quarterly goals reflect what your work or your business needs.

Seasonal Goals give you a way to honour your personal energy management: how you feel in a particular season. There are lots of reasons why our energy levels or motivation might fluctuate at different times of year. Seasonal goals reflect you and what you need.

Why this approach is helpful: The approach helps you to align these two areas – how you feel and what you do. What you need and what your business (or your work) needs.

2. Define your own quarter.

With this approach, you don’t have to stick to a quarter that is 90 days long. You don’t even have to stick to the seasons as they are defined by the calendar. Based on how you feel you can define your own season and go from there.

For example, in the New Year, I will define ‘Winter’ as the whole time from January 6th to the Easter holidays. This is because I know I will feel in a winter frame of mind for all of that time. The next season will start after the Easter holidays.

In contrast, from September to December 2024, I calculated that I had 66 hours in total. This was so helpful to know when I was planning out this time.

Why this approach is helpful: Defining your own quarter helps you plan your activity based around how you tend to feel in a specific season. Knowing that I only had 66 hours in total in this quarter helped me to choose what to focus on and make realistic goals. There’s also space for new things to come up and adjust to those, using my overall focus to guide me.

3. Connect with your intuition and the bigger picture to guide your planning.

This approach asks you to connect with a bigger sense of what is guiding you when you’re planning a particular quarter. At the start of the process you dig into that bigger picture, capturing each and every thing that is in your head and get them out of your brain onto paper. This means that you can set that aside, you have a clear brain to start planning with.

You also connect with your desire – what do you want in this season? This gives your planning focus and meaning.

Why this approach is helpful: While you’re working away on things, it’s easy to get pulled in different directions – at least it is for me! I get distracted by new things, opportunities come up, I hit an unmotivated patch, and so on. I found it so helpful to have a quick way to connect to my bigger picture throughout the 90 days because it’s all captured there in the summary. It’s like a roadmap that brought me back to what I needed to do, and why. That why part was really important – it really helped me to connect to my inner motivation.

My experience

I’m no expert on this approach, I’m just learning. And I’m not connected to the podcast, I’m just a listener. I can say that I learned enough to be sure that this approach is really helpful.

Whilst I initially found that there were a lot of steps, I am more confident with it now. So please don’t worry if you listen to the Plan Simple episodes mentioned below and it feels overwhelming! I’ve broken it down step by step for this session, and I’m really clear on the structure now. Each step leads naturally to the next.

Limitations for the session: We might not get through all the steps but we’ll have a good go, and you can listen to the podcast episodes and finish it off in your own time. The key resources from the Plan Simple podcast are below.

RESOURCES: Learn more.

Here are the Plan Simple episodes that out the approach. I’ll be taking a mix of what I’ve learned from each of these episodes and applying it within the session.

I’m not affiliated or connected with Mia Moran or Plan Simple, I’ve just been learning her approach from these two episodes and learning from my own experience of putting it into practice.
